Presentation
The overall aim of capacity planning is to ensure that the ever-changing nature of a company’s IT infrastructure can handle the constantly evolving nature of the company’s needs for that infrastructure.
The need is three-fold:
- Input business, economical or technical change hypotheses
- Simulate activity projections to determine future capacity needs
- Get hardware, urbanism & budget plan
Capacity planning benefits include:
- The potential to defer expenditure, realizing the difference in cost between panicked buying and planned buying
- The minimizing of application risks and the risks associated with application sizing
- The reduction or elimination of the resource expenditures needed for emergency capacity expansions
Current limitations
- No comparison between before/after an event is added
- No events related to soft capping (regression from CCPT)
System requirement : for large simulations, RAM is used a lot (≈ 0.35MB/ReportClass/Day, with 50 ReportClass over a 1 year simulation, you will need about 6GB of ram).
ZRP Process
Data loading:
- Initialize data in ZRP from the ZETALY database
- This data will become available for every project
Project creation:
- Creation of a new project with a custom name
- Selection of resources to include: CPCs, LPARs
- Selection of the reference period in the previously initialized data
New simulation:
- Definition of the name & projection period (1 month in the future, 1 year, 3 years...)
Add events:
- List of available events:
- Act./Deactivate CPC
- Act./Deactivate LPAR
- Act./Deactivate report class
- Move report class in time
- Move report class on another LPAR/CPC
- Increase report class activity - at a specific time & date or an increase over a period of time
Run simulation:
- Calculate future activity from added events
- Visualize simulation results CPC by CPC or LPAR by LPAR
Data Loading Details
Note: Depending on the amount of data you load, the SMF import can take a few minutes. For more details, see SMF Reference.
After the import, you can visualize the data:

Simulation And Events
Create a simulation:
You can add an event from the menu, or directly on the event panel :
You can run the simulation of a CPC individually (with or without events):
You can explore your simulation by clicking on its name or any of its CPCs/LPARs, and looking through the Charts or Synthesis board tabs.
